(back to This I Believe)

My name is Jace Larsen and I believe in yolo. Yolo stands for you only live once, which I interpret as living life to the fullest. This means taking advantage of great opportunities because they might come again. An example of a great opportunity is getting into a great collage. It will take lots of studying and dedication but overall you'll be happier. If you don't take advantage of something great, you'll find yourself regretting it later in life. There are multiple reasons why someone would let chances go to waste. A big factor is laziness and just not wanting to do it. People find yolo as a joke but I see it as more of a battle cry or an inspiration. Yolo inspires me by saying "you only have one life so make it  successful." Unfortunately and sometimes for the better, yolo puts me outside of my comfort zone.

An example of this is Montessori Model United Nations. This is where kids all over the world from Montessori schools meet in New York to do a mock United Nations. I don't like speaking in public but I signed up anyway because this was a great opportunity and I would learn some new experiences. I got my topic and I was micro-financing in Bangladesh. The most I had ever presented to before was 30 people and now I was presenting to over 100 people. Although I was very nervous presenting, I felt so happy that I had done it. I had met new friends and learned new experiences. This was stepping out of my comfort zone and after I was done, I looked back on everything I had done in New York and in the end, did not regret it one bit.

Getting outside of your comfort zone can help strengthen skills you haven't mastered. Although I don't like speech and presenting in front of a crowd, I've gotten good at it because I've had so many experiences. Sometimes you have to force yourself to do things even if you don't like it but know it's for the better. Getting to know more people and being extroverted helps because friends can help you if you are going through a tough time or if you need someone to brighten your day. Yolo is like a guideline, it shows you what to do and why you should do it.
