(back to This I Believe)

When I was young, at age four I thought everything was right in the world. There was no harm done except when I got in trouble. Everyone had a laid back life that they could enjoy. Or so I thought. Everyone needs happiness and joy in their life. But without many things this is not possible. Everything needed to be just right.

I woke up one chilly morning. The sun was just rising casting a beautiful glare across the ocean. I could see it from my bedroom window. I felt like running towards it like it was pulling me in. My sister was sound asleep in the bed next to mine. I tiptoed out of the room. My mother was also asleep. My brother and my father were playing quietly on the rug. The frost lay quietly on the glass door not disturbed by anything. I lay my hand on the metal handle and quietly pulled it open with a tug. After I quietly closed the door I ran. I left all of the things that made me sad or angry behind. But I always kept the things that meant most to me close to my heart.

When I got back to the house, sand blew out of my hair. I did not mind this one bit. Everything was just right. I realized that not everyone has these opportunities. Not everyone can feel safe to walk out their own door. Everyone has the right to be free. Everyone needs a little sparkle in their life. We all need to live the life intended for us. Through everything that happens, good or bad, life goes on. Freedom does not come around everyday. In this imperfect world, bad things do happen. Freedom is a gift that can be taken for granted, but I believe it is a right thing that should be kept forever.
