About Julie
Hi, I'm Julie. I'm entering my twelfth year of teaching middle school students after graduating cum laude from Davidson College with a double-major in English and Biology. I have many diverse interests that I'd love to discuss and share with you, including writing, literature, recipe development, food photography, baking, technology, sustainability, faith, and animal advocacy.
In terms of what you can expect in my class, you should know that I'm not a perfect, all-knowing bucket o' knowledge to be dumped over your head. Rather, I'm a facilitator: I learn facts and methods myself, and then I create situations (usually in-class application projects) that inspire you to learn them -- and other, unexpected lessons! -- too. So basically, I'm kind of like a wizard.
What you can trust about me is that I'm passionate about innovative, effective curriculum development that prioritizes your independence within a supportive framework. Other people seem to think so, too: my curriculum has been featured in the national publication English Journal and presented at conferences around the country.
That's my teaching, but what about the rest of my life? In addition to teaching writing, I do it as a second career. I write an award-winning food blog, Willow Bird Baking, which has been featured in, among other publications, Ladies' Home Journal and SAVEUR Magazine. I live in downtown San Diego with my rescue poodle, Byrd, and my red-eared slider (that's an aquatic turtle), Squirt.
Most of all, I'm excited and proud (already!) to be your teacher.
