Personal Legends: beginning the I Am Project.
|
Begin brainstorming about career paths that interest you, trying to keep your ideas broad. Talk to your parents about what they think of their chosen career paths. Think about whether those interest you. Why or why not? Come prepared to discuss.
Start reading Crucial Conversations, a summary about how to discuss touchy issues in a professional, productive, and satisfying way. You will need to have this read by next Monday (and fresh in your mind.) I recommend reading 1 page per day and then reviewing the entire article Sunday night. Taking notes and googling unfamiliar terms as you read will help you process the article. We will use these ideals in discussions of Nickel and Dimed as well as planning our Europe trip, among other things.

Continue work on schedule site visits. Greet faculty mentor to start your working relationship (e.g., something like, “Hi, I just found out that you’re my faculty mentor for my I AM Career Exploration. I wanted you to know I’m interested in being a _____ and I’d love to talk to you about resources or network contacts in that field if you know of any. Otherwise, I just wanted to introduce my pursuit and tell you that I’ll be contacting you when my site visit is scheduled.”)

-Epic Project. Resources:
o the definition of an epic
o the stages of a monomyth
o Epic Project sheet
- Read the Biblical Flood story and the Wikipedia excerpt, Was There Really a Great Flood? ("Claims of Historicity") and come prepared to discuss flood stories.
- Create J-Flood Comparison. On one page, create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the flood narratives. This will serve as planning. On the next page, create an arguable thesis to support whether or not there was a great flood. Then write your journal supporting it.
This is a writing exercise, so feel free to focus less on your personal beliefs and more on what thesis is most defensible in an essay/journal. Use evidence from both flood narratives in your response (for this simple journal entry that does not need to stand up to full academic scrutiny, you may cite the Wikipedia article.
